Proposal submitted to the National Science Foundation Decision, Risk and Management Sciences to addresses knowledge gaps in the communication of personal and community preparedness by analyzing preparedness messages, the channels through which they flow, and the public’s message comprehension and reaction.
Institute for Integration of Research on Climate Change and Hazards in the Americas
Funded by the National Science Foundation. The Association of American Geographers, together with the PanAmerican Institute for Geography and History of the Organization of American States, the US Geological Survey, the National Communication Association, and the United Nations Environment Programme Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, are co-organizing a two-week institute to identify, engage, and integrate a new generation of scholars and practitioners across the region with on-going studies and activities of leading organizations directed at climate change and hazards.
Social Media Constraints and Opportunities Case Study and Industry White Paper
Funded by the Department of Homeland Security’s National Center for Food Protection and Defense to generate feedback regarding the degree to which an agency or organization’s messages are reported accurately in social media, including rumors and intentionality; the shifting levels of reported outrage; and the relationship between communication by relevant agencies, organizations, industries and key online stakeholders.

Funded by the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security to develop an implementation plan for government agency coordination in a major disaster.
Office of Homeland Security Stakeholders Workshop
Funded by the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security to facilitate a two-day workshop to improve communication among the Office of Homeland Security, Regional Response Council, and Emergency Responders.
Resilient Communities
Community resilience is a concept that is gaining much attention from scholars, private organizations and governmental agencies. The term resilience is meant to indicate a given community’s ability to “bounce back” from a crisis or disaster.
Communicating Science Conference
The Center for Risk and Crisis Management in partnership with the National Science Foundation, the K20 Center, NOAA, the Office of the Vice President for Research, and Tandberg, held its inaugural conference on communicating science on April 2, 2009 at the National Weather Center on The University of Oklahoma’s research campus. The theme of the daylong conference was “Communicating Science: A Conference on Communicating Weather Risks.”
